Kodaikanal

Sobriquet: Serene hill station

Kodaikanal is situated in the southern part of upper palani hills in the western ghats and it comes under the state Tamil Nadu. Kurunji a flowering plant which blossoms only once in 12 years is a nature's gift to KodaiKanal. It's at an altitude of over 2100 metres and is neither too cold in winter nor too hot in summer. Kodaikanal is a serene hill station and all the picturesque waterfalls, the beautiful lakes make it one of the best hill stations. This flora and fauna rich hillstation is about 120 km from Madurai. Here are some interesting places in Kodaikannal that can be visited.

The Lake:
A vast man-made lake spreading around sixty acres and surrounded by green wood slopes makes it magnificently beautiful. You can do boating here. Boating is a good entertainment at Kodaikannal.


Bryant park:
On the eastern side of the lake is Bryant park. In the month of MAY a horticulture show is oraganised here.

There is a Solar Physical Observatory situated at the highest point in Kodai.

Runnning along a steep slope about 1 km is Coaker's walk which also provides an excellent view of the plains.

There are two telescope houses, one near the Kurinji temple and the other at Coaker's walk.

The Gren Valley view provides a magnificent view of the Vaigai Dam.

The three rocks standing shoulder to shoulder which are called Pillar rocks are about 7 km from Kodai, measuring to a height of 400 ft mts give a scenic view.

Kumbakkarai which is about 12 km are a charming waterfalls and also a good picnic spot, the Bear shola falls is also a nice picnic spot.

Silver Cascade is another water falls located on the Ghat road.

Shenbaganur Museum is a Flora and Fauna museum. It is a museum by the Sacred Heart college. You can find one of the best orchidoriums in the country with over 300 species.

Berjam Lake about 21 km is a favourite camp site.
The Perumal Peak about 11.3 km, a 2,400 mt high peak gives a good opportunity for trekking.

With all this and much more Kodaikannal has emerged into one of the good hill stations in India.
